Christopher Kilkus Photographer Martin Munkacsi

Born in Hungary in 1896, Martin Munkacsi (1896–1963) continues to maintain the title of one of the most famous and influential photographers in the world. Best known for his photographs of sports, entertainers, political events and street life in Germany and Hungary, Munkacsi captured the free-spirit style of the 1920s and 1930s eras.

Starting out as a house painter, Munkacsi taught himself about photography during his tenure as a reporter and poet for three Hungarian newspapers (AzEst, PestiNapló and Szinházi Elet). He began submitting photographs along with his news reports. Soon thereafter, Munkacsi began contributing photographs to The Studio, Das Deutsche Lichtbild, Photographie (France), and Modern Photography (England).
